2025年10月21日の臨時国会において、高市早苗さんが日本で初めての女性総理大臣に選ばれました。これまで日本の総理大臣はすべて男性で、女性が政治のトップに立つことはありませんでした。世界ではすでに多くの国で女性リーダーが誕生しており、英国のマーガレット・サッチャーさん、ドイツのアンゲラ・メルケルさん、ニュージーランドのジャシンダ・アーダーンさん、インドのインディラ・ガンディーさんなど有名な方も多くおられます。

 女性リーダーは、柔軟な思考力、多様性への対応力、部下への細やかな配慮、高いコミュニケーション能力といった特徴を持っていると言われています。長く男性の社会であった政治の世界に飛び込んでいったことで、柔軟な思考と多様性への対応力 課題解決において多角的な視点を持っていて、柔軟に対応する能力に優れている、様々な背景を持つメンバーを活かすことができるとも言われています。

部下への細やかな配慮や、感情の繊細さや観察力を活かして、部下一人ひとりの個性や状況に応じた指導法を工夫する傾向もあるそうです。高いコミュニケーション能力によって、メンバーとの信頼関係を築き、こまめに声かけを行うなど気配りもでき、チーム全体の雰囲気を良好にしながら、高い統率力と広い視野を持っているのも女性リーダーの特長だそうです。

今回の高市総理誕生は、総理大臣は男性というこれまでの固定観念を打ち破る出来事です。女子中学生や女子高校生の皆さんにとって、「女性が総理大臣になった」という事実は、自分の可能性を広げる力になります。政治や社会の仕組みは難しく感じるかもしれませんが、私たちの生活や未来に深く関わっています。たとえば、教育制度、環境政策、ジェンダー平等など、皆さんの学校生活や将来の進路にも影響を与えるのが政治です。

これまで女性の声が政治に十分に反映されてこなかった背景には、議員の多くが男性であることや、育児や介護などの負担が女性に偏っていたこともあると言われています。高市総理の誕生によって、こうした課題に光が当たり、より多様な視点から政策がつくられることが期待されます。特に、若い世代の教育やジェンダー平等、子どもや若者の声を政治に届ける仕組みづくりが進むことを願っています。

 また、女子中高生の皆さんには、「政治は遠い世界の話」ではなく「自分たちの未来をつくる道具」だと感じてほしいです。選挙権を持つ年齢になったとき、自分の意見を社会に届ける手段として政治を活用できるよう、今から関心を持つことが大切です。

最後に、私事で恐縮ですが、高市早苗総理は私の大学の同級生にあたることを先ほど知りました。学部が違いますので一緒に学んだことはないと思いますが、学内ですれ違ったことくらいはあるかもしれません、これを機に、私もこれまで以上に政治について考えてみようと思っています。

「Principal’s blog – October 31^st 2025」   Japan’s first female prime minister.

In the extraordinary Diet session on October 21, 2025, Sanae Takichi was elected as Japan’s first female Prime Minister. Until now, all of Japan’s Prime Ministers have been men, and no woman has held the top political position. In many countries around the world, female leaders have already emerged, with well-known figures such as Margaret Thatcher from the UK, Angela Merkel from Germany, Jacinda Ardern from New Zealand, and Indira Gandhi from India.

Female leaders are said to possess qualities such as flexible thinking, the ability to respond to diversity, careful consideration for their subordinates, and strong communication skills. By stepping into the male-dominated political world, they are able to bring diverse perspectives to problem-solving and adapt flexibly to challenges. They are also known to be good at making the most of team members from various backgrounds. Additionally, their sensitivity and keen observational skills allow them to develop leadership methods tailored to each subordinate’s personality and circumstances. With their high communication abilities, they are able to build trust with team members and maintain a positive atmosphere within the team, showing strong leadership and broad vision.

The election of Prime Minister Takichi marks a breaking of the stereotype that Japan’s Prime Minister must be a man. For middle and high school girls, the fact that a woman has become Prime Minister will empower them to expand their own possibilities. While politics and social systems may seem complicated, they are deeply connected to our lives and future. For example, policies on education, the environment, and gender equality all affect your school life and future career paths.

Historically, women’s voices have not been fully reflected in politics, partly because most legislators have been men, and the burdens of childcare and caregiving have often fallen on women. With the rise of Prime Minister Takichi, it is hoped that these issues will gain attention and that policies will be created from more diverse perspectives. In particular, we hope that progress will be made in creating systems that amplify the voices of young people on issues like education, gender equality, and the concerns of children and youth.

I also want to share with middle and high school girls that politics is not something distant or disconnected, but a tool to shape your own future. When you reach the age to vote, it is important to begin taking an interest in politics now, so that you can use it to express your opinions and impact society.

Lastly, on a personal note, I recently learned that Prime Minister Sanae Takichi was a classmate of mine in university. Although we were in different faculties, we may have crossed paths on campus at some point. This has inspired me to think more deeply about politics, and I plan to reflect on it even more moving forward.
